Can automated systems actually save time?

One of the main reasons I started looking into automated trading is that I don’t have enough time to monitor markets manually throughout the day. I have a normal work schedule, so watching charts constantly isn’t realistic for me. The idea of software handling repetitive tasks sounds useful, but I’m also aware that “automated” probably doesn’t mean that the user can completely forget about the system. I’d like to understand what kind of work automation actually removes and what responsibilities remain. Does it mainly save time by handling execution and monitoring, or are there other practical advantages that I’m missing?

Saving time can certainly be one of the practical benefits, especially when a strategy involves repetitive actions. I found a general explanation of algorithmic trading useful for understanding where automation fits into the overall process. Software can monitor predefined conditions and execute programmed instructions, which means the user doesn’t necessarily have to perform every repetitive step manually. However, there is still work involved in choosing the strategy, configuring the system and checking that it is behaving as expected. Market conditions can change, and technical problems can occur, so completely ignoring an automated system probably isn’t a good idea. I’d describe it as moving some of the work from manual execution toward planning, configuration and monitoring.
